Stocking suggestions for a 30 gallon marine tank?

Okay so don’t worry i’ve had freshwater fish and now i definately think it’s time to move onto something more of a challenge. I also closely know a really good lfs that will help me out a lot. But basically i’m planning to have a mini protein skimmer and all the stuff that a small marine tank has. Now for fish i have a few questions: (by the way the tank will be fish only with live rock until i feel comfortable to add some corals or an anemone in the future)

1) I definately want 2 ocellaris clown fish, lets face it they’re essential to any marine tank in which they’re compatible. So do they need an anemone?

2) Bangaii cardinal fish, so i hear that they’re best in pairs because they get quite aggressive to the odd one out. Any thoughts on these guys?

3) Green chromis, okay so i hear they’re relatively peaceful and a good little fish. I know they’re damsel fish but do they like to be kept in groups? How many could i get (comfortably) in the 30 gallon?

4) Longnose hawkfish, i’d love one of these guys (only one) and i can’t see why i’d have many problems with one. How does that sound?

5) Schooling fish, i really want to have a schooling fish, any suggestions?

6) Coral beauty angel fish, don’t really want one but i may as well throw it into the mix, any opinons on these guys?

7) Bicolour blenny?
8) what is an ideal anemone for the ocellaris and how hard are they to look after? (don’t freak out about it i’m not going to be getting one the first day i set up the tank)

So an ideal first stocking would be:

2 x ocellaris clownfish

1 x longnose hawkfish

and

6 x Chromis (if they like to be kept in groups, or another schooling fish)

How does that all sound and please give me any suggestions but i definately feel i’m ready to go marine.

I would also love some type of cleaner shrimp, ideally the skunk clener shrimp (lysmata amboinensis)

I don’t want to add all of these fish. They’re just some fish that i’ve read are suggested for marine beginners, they are some of the fish i would like to incorperate and with the information given i’m wanting people to give me suggestions on how to mix and match them.
Yes i’m just asking on here to get some opinions.

I also think that i should just go with the 2 clowns, and 6 chromis. How does that sound.
I’ve researched and green chromis only get about 3.5″, thats quite a bit smaller than 5″.

And you’re probably right, a hawkfish might be a bit to much for a 30 gallon.

Are you sure cleaner shrimp will be attacked by clown fish?
Or could i just keep 1 dwarf type of lion fish and give it all my attention to start off my first marine tank. I think there are some types that can be kept in a 30 gallon and it would be the only fish?
Thanks for the answers and at the moment if i were to set up a marine tank i would just stock it with one dwarf lionfish and leave it at that. My lfs has one that looks just like this fella:

http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+36+225&pcatid=225

The site says they can be in a 30gallon and it would be the only fish.

Also i would love an angler fish. Anglers and lionfish are the 2 fish i have pretty much always wanted to keep but i have never seen angles for sale, i would love a tasselled angler.

I need help finding a fish!?

Ok So I’ve got a 29 gallon aquarium with 2x 30 gallon filters, an airstone, and I do regular water changes. I plan on having by the end of my stocking I plan on having: 3 boseman rainbows, an african dwarf frog, a platy, a dwarf gourami, a cherry shrimp or two, and an angelfish (yes it may eat my shrimp). Soooo my problem is that I have room for one more fish. But I can’t find one that I want. This fish should be 1-3 inches big. I want a really interesting fish that you wouldn’t consider your typical petco’s beginner fish. Something REALLY cool. Something that will actually bond with me (like the angel will) not a ditzy fish that only eats (i.e. a platy) Any suggestions? cuz id love an idea! (no invertebrates please. unless there’s a freshwater starfish lol)

Stocking ideas for a 30G (Long) FOWLR tank?

Hi,

So I’m a beginner to the saltwater world. I recently converted my freshwater setup to a saltwater one. I’m cycling the tank with live sand and live rock.

Once the tank has cycled, I want to start adding livestock to the tank very slowly. I definitely want to do the tank correctly and be careful not to overstock.

What would you recommend for someone who is experienced with caring for fish (freshwater) but is new to saltwater?

I was thinking of getting a couple clowns, a shrimp, and maybe a small dwarf angel, but beyond that I’m open to suggestions.

10 Gallon Freshwater Tank Stocking Question?

I have set up a 10 gallon tank about a month ago. Have been testing the water and I have gone through the cycles. I have had neon’s in the tank since the second week of setting it up. I had 3 and I lost one about a week ago to NTD. I do weekly water changes and I watch my levels closely. I’ve been talking to my local pet stores here and they talked me into buying 3 Dwarf Honey Sunset Gouramis. They are really small fish and they are very pretty.

Now what was Ideal for me was to only have 1 gourami and 3 balloon mollies and the neons and I really want some red cherry shrimp. Do the shrimp count towards my stocking count? (That may be a dumb question.)

Could I add the balloon mollies and some red cherry shrimp without overstocking my tank? I would really like both but if I was in danger of overstocking I would reconsider my purchases. Could someone help me out?
I already have the 3 gouramis and they are very small no larger than an inch. The two neons are fine together and i prob should get some more. I will prob. do 3 mollies but i just wanted to know if the shrimp would over load the biofilter or not.

Beginner freshwater 10 gal stocking ideas- I need feedback!?

I’ve been reading a bunch of threads about 10 gal stocking ideas for beginners. I’m trying to decide what fish to get, and I’m on a budget!
I am not a complete beginner. I’ve done a lot of research and I’m getting into the swing of tank keeping. I still don’t have it completely down pat, though.

I have a heater for the tank.

What do you guys think? I need easy, forgiving fishies that would look beautiful.

- 5 White cloud minnows, maybe an additional tank mate of a diff species?

- 5 male guppies, an additional tank mate? Are guppies actually hardy enough for a beginner tank? They appear a little weak to me.

- 1 betta (rather not)

- 1 dwarf gourami, an additional tank mate that he wouldn’t murder?

- 5 cherry red shrimp? I have absolutely no algae in my tank though. All the plants are artificial. The shrimp wouldn’t have any yummy algae to eat :(
Could I possibly transfer algae from a friend’s tank into mine?
I really like shrimps!

- 5 Danios

- 5 rasboras

-6 neon tetras? I heard their fragile though. Some say they’re hardy, some say they’re not due to inbreeding. What ARE they?

Any other fish ideas? I’ve only had experience with bettas so far (in bowls and in tanks).

Tell me your experiences!
Thanks a bunch!
Aren’t dwarf gouramis related to bettas? I thought they were on the violent side and would benefit from not having many tank mates.
Guppies and a dwarf gourami could work? That’d be awesome.
By the way, all your answers are very helpful :)
Wow, do much feedback! Thanks peeps.
Dave, I’m liking the idea of danios. And those glofish are spanking awesome.
I’m hesitant to use neons… some people say they’re hardy, some people say they’re sensitive.
White clouds seem hardy. Yeah?
Would a dwarf gourami work with WCMM and danios? or would I have to deal with a fishy murderer?
