I’ve posted similar question here and got some good answers, but a few things have changed, I’ve gained some information since… And I just like getting other people opinions and hear their knowledge…

So, I have this 10 gallon freshwater/tropical aquarium. I finally got it set up and running, so the water can get to where it needs to be. Any suggestion of how long I should let it go before adding fish?

I haven’t gotten any fish for it yet, since I wanted to make sure the water was just right before adding them, and risk killing them…
And I have some fish grouping ideas, and I’m sure when I go the people at the store will be able to help me…
But can anyone on here give me what they would put in a tank that small? what fish? What plants? What decorations?
I want a “showcase” fish in there. And when I say showcase, I mean one that’s slightly bigger and brighter than all the others around it. I’ve looked at gouramis and I like the dwarf and honey gouramis, so if I can’t find anything else to my liking I might get one of them to go in there. But does anyone have any other suggestions? Of bigger colorful fish I could center in my tank? And what smaller ones should I put around it. I was thinking maybe 2 cory catfish, and few platies, and maybe even a couple shrimp or another small school of fish… I can’t really make up my mind there… So any suggestions should help!
And yes.. i know I have to be careful about putting in to many.

Another topic. I have a Betta. He lives in a 2 gallon fish bowl. He’s fairly docile, and even though I’ve shown him his own reflection and other male betta, he doesn’t puff up or act necessarily aggressive. Do you think he could live in the 10 gallon? I’ve heard it possible he could get along with the community fish, but not the gourami. Do you think with his docile demeanor they could potentially get along? Or would the other fish be more likely to attack him. I probably won’t try this, but even if I did I know what keep an eye out for fish attacking other fish.
If I can’t, I would like to get something to heat up his fish bowl. For the time being it does not have one, but I know they are tropical fish. So far, the cooler water has seemed to affect him at all, he’s moves quite a bit, and eats regularly. It probably has to do with the fact I keep my house warmer… But it’s starting to get colder and I’m worried.. I don’t want him to be too uncomfortable. So do they even make heaters for bowls? and if they do how much would they be?

One last question. I’ve been really interested in getting another aquarium. I LOVE marine fish. How exactly hard is it to get a marine tank set up? What are the steps involved?
It’s something I’m highly considering, but will have to wait on. But I KNOW I would love at least a pair of clownfish if not more. What are some other good, BRIGHT COLORED tank makes for them?
I also don’t want to big of an aquarium in my house or I won’t have room for it… So how many clowns and how many of another type or two of fish could go into a 30-40 gallon tank? How about a 50 gallon? How expensive is it to turn one of those into a saltwater tank?

I hope I can get some good answers here! I’m honestly curious! I’m sorry I have so many question in here, I hope someone can answer them all!
But thank you!
Oh! I thought of another question!
If I do leave my Betta in the 2g bowl, is there enough room for a dwarf african frog, a snail or 2, or even 1-2 female Betta? Any room for anything else AT ALL? Thanks!!!

(by the way i already know how to breed betta fish, im just asking if it’s ok to feed freshwater fish their flake
and/or pellet food in order for them to spawn and if they will still spawn if i feed them their flake/ pellet foods)

I have been to loads of fish shops in search of live food for my breeding of betta splendens, but it seemed that they only stocked them on a very random basis.I replaced live food with boiled earthworm cut up very finely (it works great), but i went to all the hassle of finding or digging them up , scalding them with water , cutting them with a scissors and freezing them for later…. and being always told by my fiancee that I was disgusting. One day my 6 year old daughter returned from a toy shop down the road with “sea monkeys”? I never heard of them either, on close inspection they turned out to be brine shrimp that a child could harvest and keep them for a guaranteed 2 years, they multiply or breed or whatever readily…..I couldnt believe it, happy days, so its the toy shop for pet food and pet shop for pet toys ( i have dogs too).

I have set up a 10 gallon tank about a month ago. Have been testing the water and I have gone through the cycles. I have had neon’s in the tank since the second week of setting it up. I had 3 and I lost one about a week ago to NTD. I do weekly water changes and I watch my levels closely. I’ve been talking to my local pet stores here and they talked me into buying 3 Dwarf Honey Sunset Gouramis. They are really small fish and they are very pretty.

Now what was Ideal for me was to only have 1 gourami and 3 balloon mollies and the neons and I really want some red cherry shrimp. Do the shrimp count towards my stocking count? (That may be a dumb question.)

Could I add the balloon mollies and some red cherry shrimp without overstocking my tank? I would really like both but if I was in danger of overstocking I would reconsider my purchases. Could someone help me out?
I already have the 3 gouramis and they are very small no larger than an inch. The two neons are fine together and i prob should get some more. I will prob. do 3 mollies but i just wanted to know if the shrimp would over load the biofilter or not.

First a bit of background about myself, I’m quite experienced with owning freshwater fish.
I currently own tanks with guppies, red-tail sharks, mollies, gouramis, mbunas, catfishes, platies, shrimps, clown/kuhli/yoyo loches, etc. And i think i’m doing really well with it.

However, i have never owned a Betta, or a Goldfish, though i have an idea of how to treat them.
But I have never owned a mini bowl tank. Unfortunatley, i have received a “betta bowl” for xMas, that looks similar to this in terms of size:

http://www.altavistamall.com/psproducts/ACU07001.jpg

Given that I will make use of it, probably putting my first Betta in…

~~~First (set of) question:~~~
How does it really work?
As in, would you even cycle that?
Would you bother putting gravel in it, i’m planning to have horn wort in it, which doesn’t necessary need gravel.
How do you do water change? I don’t think vacuum cleaner is an option. It’s so small too, wouln’d pouring water in and out so stress the fish?
And given how small the bowl is, how often do you change the water?
My room is quite cold in winter, maybe 10-15 celcius? You can’t put a heater in that thing.
Right.. i really dont’ get how those stores can have maintain those cups of bettas…
~~~ Second (set of ) questions: ~~~
Please don’t kill me, but on the box, it says don’t get mistaken by the name, thought it’s called “Betta Bowl”, you can put a golfish in.
Now i’m pretty surprised, i thought Goldfish needs BIG tank for how messy they are. So I think it’s lying.
But in case i’m wrong, do you know any kind of GOldfish that can be happy in that bowl?

THanks!

Hey I have a 10 gal that I’m raising feeder guppies, snails, and cherry shrimp in. I have live hornwart (freshwater plant) growing really good and have plenty of hiding areas in it for babies to hide in. I have some algae but not enough that my shrimp and snails can’t keep under control. If I leave my lights on 24/7 will the guppies, snails, and shrimp grow faster? or will it actually hurt them? Also has anyone heard of “Snail milk”? Its a product I’ve seen on ebay and wonder if it really works or if it is just a scam. Please give me your advice and opinions. Thanks

For example: female betta, crab, shrimp, loach, livebearer, gourami, danio, catfish, barb, algae eater, cichlid (both African & South American,) newt, salamander, freshwater spiny eel, discus, knifefish, koi, fancy goldfish, and angelfish.
