He came to live with us 5/29 to a freshwater external filter tank. He lives with three zebra danios & a synodontis catfish- all in peace (so far). Instant ocean has been added to tank to increase specific gravity .002 over a few occasions- now it is 1.006. Nitrate was initially 20 and fluxuates up to 40 (water changes bring it back to 20). I’ve read about “black chin” and stress lines. I thought it might be related to the nitrates- how often should water changes be done-how much? (have been doing 25% every three or four days-10 gallon tank). I don’t think he’s stressed- he eats well (shrimp, mussels, bloodworms) and is curious about his tank, rests on bottom after he eats but isn’t depressed. Live plant and fake plants. Hidey fake log. Gravel . Ammonia and Nitrite are 0. gH 300 and kH 120. Any ideas on why he is black on his sites? It is darker than grey. It is small dots or spots on his belly and dark areas on his sides and under his chin. Lately they disappear at night. He okay?
Original values: 20 Nitrate, 0 Nitrite, 75 gH, 80 kH, 7.8 pH, 80 deg F, 0 Ammonia. Current values since the increased salinity: 20-40 Nitrate (water changes done when 40 to bring down to 20), 0 Nitrite, 300 gH, 120 kH, 7.8 pH, 0 Ammonia.
I did email the crew and they said he sounded okay and water parameters were good. They said that pufferfish will change color and not to be worried unless there’s other signs of illness or if the color didn’t ever go away, as it does at night.
