You can get one male halfmoon betta, 3 panda cory cats, and three ghost shrimp for your ten(: If you get a twenty you could get that, plus a group of six or seven neon tetras and two more cory cats(:

gourami are good hearty fish and very pretty as well. They work well in community tanks just make sure that when you get them they get along (i.e. you go to petco to get the fish and they are already in the tank together and seem to be getting along).

if you’ve never had a fish before you should just start with an easy one like a goldfish or a guppy, but if you have then i don’t know…

10-20 gallons or litres? (Or something else?) If it’s 20 US gallons, you could get a group of at least 6 corys to tidy up the extra food on the bottom of the tank. But don’t treat them as bottom feeders. Give them their own food, such as shrimp pellets & algae discs.
Goldfish can’t go in the tanks you mentioned. They are too small. You MIGHT be able to get away with ONE fancy goldfish in a strong filtered 20 gallon, but a 25 gallon with a strong filter would be better.
You can also get cherry shrimp for a 10-20 gallon tank. They are tiny, & even reproduce sometimes. (Though the fish in the tank may eat the babies.)
For fish that aren’t bottom feeders, well, it depends on which tank size. If it’s a 10 gallon, you could get min 6 neon tetras, and a couple male platys. If it’s a 20 gallon, you have a lot more options. One male molly, 10 cardinal or neon tetras, well, you could figure out the stocking. =)
I just wouldn’t suggest you breed. You would need 2 tanks for that.

Ghost shrimp are great at cleaning the bottom. I use them in all my tanks except my chichild tank and gold fish tank lol.
A good starter fish is a nice school of black skirt tetras, zebra danios, rasbora hets, or white clouds. All are fairly hardy and fairly inexpensive as well..
Another nice addition to a tank is a cory cat (or a school of corys) which are also really good at cleaning the bottom of your tank. There are tons of corys, some of the most common are green, albino, and peppered corys (there are also bronze, panda and so on and so fourth) now they pretty much school within their own species (or color you could say) except, Albinos and Peppered seeing as how they ARE the same species, just ones the albino version. In one of my tanks I have 5 albinos and 5 peppered and they are so cute to watch as they school together, plus the bottom of my tank stays really really clean.
Despite having a small tank, there are still quite a bit of things you can do.
Just be sure to cycle your tank and not to add too many fish at one time…

i would start with – 2f mollies and 1m Mollie,
-2 gouramis
-a pleco and a cleaning snail
and some neon tetras but remember these are all tropical fish and you will need a lot of hiding spots and and some live plants.
