A betta COULD live in that, but it wouldn’t be the best. But, there is absolutely NO way a goldfish could live in that. Goldfish grow to be 12″ long and can live 20 years. Or, they die long before that because of the poor health of being kept in a goldfish bowl.

If you’re dead-set on putting a fish in that, I’d recommend a betta… but maybe you should find another use for it. You could make it a mini-terrarium for a few little plants. That would look pretty.

Your gut feeling about that thing is correct.

Any fish you try and keep in there will die. Betta from the cold and goldfish just from the lack of space.

Just because it says something on the box doesn’t mean it’s true.

Sure you could put a fish in it, they dont say how long it will live though?

Stick to proper fish tanks like you already have and you will continue to ‘do really well’.

No fish will ever be happy in here a goldfish nor a betta I went to http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=15445 and it only holds one liter which is 1/4 of gallon not suitable for any fish but it does look nice you could use it to hold flowers or something maybe even some shrimp could fit in there

That is just a decoration, it isn’t suitable for any fish at all, not even a Betta. Goldfish DO need big filtered tanks. That looks about a 1 gallon, maybe less.

Maybe keep non-aquatics in it. Or even just try to do a mini-planted tank with no critters, a pico planted tank. They’re all the rage!

Goldfish grow too large for anything unfiltered, and anything less than 20 gallons. Most need more than that.

Despite what companies say and sell, there is no fish that can live in a small, unfiltered bowl. They are only in this for the money, not the health of the fish.

You are right, they are lying. They are also lying about it being a suitable home for a betta (or any other fish for that matter).

All fish need filters. And since bettas are a tropical fish, they also need heaters.

Um, you dont cycle a bowl. Bacteria needs to have a chance to grow. With bowls, even though they are of inadequate size for any fish, you need to change the water far too often for bacteri to even grow on the gravel. Youll need to do water changes every other day to even keep the tank clear.

To water change a bowl, you just pour the water out. Its the only option. Most bowls are too small to even scoop a cup of water out of it. You have to pour it out. And it is stressful. Water changes in
general are stressful on fish. And when you do them this often in this small of a tank, where temperatures and ammonia can change in the blink of an eye, the fish isnt going to live the best of lives…

Stores maintain those cups because most good stores actually take all the bettas into the back and do daily water changes and general maintenance on them. They also arent in those bowls their entire lives. People buy them. Same with their extremely overstocked tanks. People buy them. What you see in the pet store is only temporary.

i would use another bowl for the betta. that bowl looks pretty small. fish are just like any creatures. nothing likes to be confined in very small spaces. if you put plants and gravel, where will the fish swim?? if you are intent on keeping the bowl (it is pretty, although not very functional) i would put a small lamp (not too hot) next to the bowl to keep him warm. betta water should be changed every few days by emptying about 50% and putting new water in (cleaned of course!), or when the water starts to cloud. i have also found that a turkey baster works quite well for pivking up the gunk that accumulates at the bottom of the bowl…my advice: chuck the new bowl.

your going to need to do about 25% water change weekly. add small amount of gravel if you want. keep in a room that about 72′ F and then you could put a betta in it. leave room at the top for it to gulp air. your going to get a lot of crap from people that you need a heater and a larger tank. if you keep it clean and in a warmer room do your water changes you’ll be fine and so will the betta. no way for the gold fish.
