  1. Discus are beautiful fish, but require pristine water quality. If you go with them, I’d advise doing a lot of research before hand to give them the proper set up.

The others sound fine, just 1 shark for the tank. Most sharks tend to be territorial to other sharks, and sometimes the one shark will get territorial to the others in the tank when it gets older. I have a red tail shark in my community tank, for the most part he’s good, occasionally I’ll see him shoo another fish away from him, but no torn fins etc. on the others. And, for the gourami, again I’d only have 1 per tank. They also tend to be territorial to their own kind.

  2. My gouramis seem to be very sturdy. THe kissing chase each other all the time and keeps the tank motivated.

  3. If I got to choose, I would put 3 bala sharks, 3 peacock eels, 3 Africian dwarf frogs, ghost shrimp.

  5. You can put more than just one gourami in the tank but I would suggest you do some research or ask the person at the pet store to give you only female gouramis they don’t cause any trouble. Or 1 Male to 4-6 female.

  6. If you get a 55 gallon and these are your favorite fish I would get 2-3 Discus and 5 hatchet fish. By the way, Discus are cichlids. You could start the tank out with the 5 neons, 1 black skirt tetra and ghost shrimp though eventually the Discus will eat the phost shrimp and when they become adult size the neons will become lunch though you have some time before that happens.

  7. Discus ARE cichlids! lol Plus they must be the hardest thing to keep alive and healthy of all fish that i’ve known/tried to keep.

Did you mean to say that you were very inexperienced?? If you are experienced and don’t want any cichlids. Try going for the oddballs. Like Leopard bushfish, Knight gobies, striped peacock eels, African Butterflyfish, Bichirs, Elephant nose. Otherwise if you are inexperienced, i would stick to maybe gouramis
