i won a betta fish at the carnival and i was researching the fish and the care of them, right now he is in a plastic fish bowl, and tomorrow i was going to petsmart to get a new tank and plants and food, i was on the petsmart website and saw that brine shrimp is like 15 dollars!! I am NOT spending that much money on fish food, my freshwater fish have been fine eating fish flakes there entire life, including the guppies that i bought prego and now they are all breeding with each other which im working on seperating them, but anyway cant betta fish eat fish flakes?
I need a really good reason to buy the 15 dollar fish food for them
there are beta pellets… usually $4 for a canister that will last forever.

Yes your betta will be fine on either dry betta flake or pellets, or even just a good quality general tropical fish food.
They will appreciate a treat of brine shrimp, bloodworms or similar, but it’s not essential.
A lot of people fuss over betta, but they have no special diet requirements that are any different from other small insect eating tropical fish. You can feed them the same as you would guppies, platies, gourami etc.

That’s just on the website. My petsmart sells it for about five dollars. You should buy a variety of foods hough; freeze dried, flakes, and frozen (some live would be nice!) thanks for moving the fish into a tank, rather than imprisoning him in a bowl! You’re a good person to care about your fish!
EDIT: yes bettas can eat flakes, and freeze dried foods too. Fish food shouldn’t cost that much at the actual store.

There is betta pellets for like 3 dollars a can and they last for like 5 months usually. I think that is a good deal. I’m not sure how much bloodworms are but they eat those too and they aren’t that much. maybe 5 or 6 dollars. Hope you have fun with yours!

Some bettas won’t eat flakes but you can always try, Not many people actually feed their bettas brine shrimp, that would only be for a treat like once a week, if flakes don’t work, go with betta pellets they’re about 7 dollars for a years worth
dried bloodworms are also quite cheap

Since when do carnivals use Bettas as prizes? That’s a new one on me, I always won goldfish.
Anyway, if you are sure it is in fact a Betta, you do not feed brine shrimp as a staple food. It can be used to supplement his diet, as a treat, but is not essential (I have never heard of brine shrimp costing that much, either). A Betta’s main diet should consist of Betta pellets. Many Bettas will not eat flake food, it isn’t natural to them. Most Betta keepers feed Hikari Bio-Gold Betta pellets. I feed the baby-sized pellets cause they seem easier for my Bettas to eat. You can buy these practically anywhere, and they cost less than $3 a package. A package lasts a good long time for just one Betta, too. I feed 4-6 pellets once a day. You can feed 2-3 pellets twice a day if you prefer. Check the price on blood worms. They make a nice treat for Bettas, and a little variety is good for them.
Whatever you do, don’t buy one of those hideously tiny tanks they sell for Bettas. A Betta needs a minimum of a 2.5 gallon tank (5 gallon is better), with a heater and gentle filter. A filtered tank makes less work for you, and is much healthier for your Betta. You can get a proper habitat at Walmart for less than $30. If you need a good reason to invest this much in your Betta, consider this: A healthy, well-cared for Betta will live at least 5 years, maybe more. One kept in poor conditions may live a year, if you are lucky. It will not be a happy, healthy life, either. Bettas are very intelligent. Treating them that way amounts to animal cruelty.
Bettas may be “only” fish, but they are God’s creatures, too. If you want to assume responsibility for his life, you have a moral obligation to make sure that it receives at least adequate care. I urge you to go to a book store or library and get a book on Bettas. Learn all about how to care for the little guy properly, and he will reward you with years of enjoyment. If you can’t or won’t, give him to someone who will.
Good luck!

Are you looking at brine shrimp eggs for the hatching of
normal flake would be sufficient with live food once a week, flake has all that a fish needs.

15 dollar fish food? bull $hit!
just buy betta pellets at petco or walmart. they’re under 4 dollars most likely. i had a betta in a small tank the size of a oversized coffee mug and i fed it nothing but pellets and it lived for a good four years. my betta right now is in a plant vase and its lived for more than 2 years and shes going on strong on a diet of pellets. dont waste your cash
