do freshwater shrimp need to have constant bubbles to add oxygen in their water?

i have a betta fish and i was thinking about getting him a shrimp as a tankmate, but i’m at college and during breaks i’m taking him home to stay in a little bowl until I come back and put him in his tank. So would my shrimp be able to stay the bowl or would I have to leave him at college? I wouldn’t be able to feed him then, but there are plants and roots for him to nibble on.
Is it doable? Should I forget the whole thing? Any suggestions?
oh my tank my betta is in already has an air pump in it. it all came together in a betta kit. it’s not good for the betta?

Bubbles or air pumps don’t add oxygen to the tank like most people think they do, the pump just agitates the surface which creates more exchange with water and air.

I suggest you don’t put the shrimp in the bowl, you would need a air pump and that would disturb the betta. Keep the shrimp in its own container with an air pump.

Bettas do not need flowing water to obtain oxygen, they have a organ called a labyrinth which allows them to directly breathe from the surface. A air pump isn’t needed for a betta. While a slow moving current won’t be the worst for your betta it essentially isn’t needed, if you do keep an air pump with your betta get a sponge filter to put it to use.

  2. Yes you can get your shrimp. Bubblers do very little to nothing to add dissolved oxygen to your tank. Filters thru a gas exchange do this (like waves, fountains, water falls etc.) You can get your shrimp as long as there is housing enough when you travel for both. Just remember water changes! If he must be left at college when you return home with no food, then don’t get him. Either he goes with you and the betta or he should not be added.

Yes bettas do breath thru their gills, they just happen to have an extra organ to allow them to breath from the surface as well.
